Remember Ritchie Valens?
Growing
up in a Hispanic family, Ritchie Valens was a household name, as Sunday
afternoon barbeques would consist of Tejano music. Of course on the radio the famous song “La Bamba” would come on
and the family would know the words.
Although I never was alive during the life of Valens, I do know his
voice and guitar when I hear it. And
has been an inspiration in my life as a guitar player and singer. Only living to the young age of only 17, he
could have gone in my mind far enough to the lengths of even Elvis. Nobody can turn down the salsy rhythm of
Latin American beat. Especially that
Spanish guitar. Sadly, the only view of
Ritchie Valens I have is through that movie.
Sadly as if it wasn’t enough to lose one rockabilly legend, this earth
lost two. In a plane crash that also carried Buddy Holly. Also from Valens, I got my love of those
old classic “du-wop” songs. One
favorite, “Donna”. Since I wasn’t
around during his time, I don’t have a lot to say. However, I wish that he was around, cause I know he would
probably still be pumping out those hits. He is one of the few Hispanic
rockabilly legends. Ill just have to
enjoy recordings, and live off of his great sense of music. And picture in my mind, a live performance.
