Brian Setzers’ 68 Comeback

By Orlando Rios

If you’re a rockabilly fan you know who Brian Setzer is.  Hell, if you’re a guitar fan you know who Brian Setzer is.  Best known for his work with the Stray Cats and the Grammy award winning Brian Setzer Orchestra, this cat has gone back to his rockabilly roots.  In his new CD “Ignition”, he trios up with BSO players Bernie Dresel (drums) and Mark Winchester (bass).  It features 14 tracks of hot rod songs and makeout tunes, 13 of which are new Setzer compositions. I got one of the advanced copies when they came out from the label Surfdog.  And I must say I was impressed.  To this day I have not taken it out of my CD player.  The style is superb, and of course Setzer still shows why he is one of the greatest guitar players alive. My personal favorite on the CD is “Dreamsville”.  I dig the slow classic songs.  Although im disappointed that its not played on tour, for it is a great song.  Although I do know that it would be hard for Brian to sing all those parts.  If you haven’t noticed, the song is back rounded by the Brianaires, who is none other than Setzer multi tracked.  I haven’t got to see them live yet, but will in Las Vegas at the House of Blues on August 11, so Brian if you read this, send out a holler to me! Setzer also took his trio on three shows so far.  Which include Leno, Regis, and Conan.  The Conan performance was far superior to any of the other shows in my opinion.  The song was “Hell Bent”, and Brian flied on the guitar.  Which by the way is dropped d tuning.  Anyway, this 68cbs is a winner for any guitar lover out there, and if you haven’t went out and picked up a copy of the CD, you do not know what you are missing.  So get out there.  This is one cd in which we want to tab out the whole thing! We already have tabs for “Ignition” and “Hell Bent”, which will be posted as soon as we find a tabulator program to do so.  Until next time, this is Orlando Rios!
